What is a thermodynamic system?
- A thermodynamic system is an area in space upon which the study is concentrated.
- Everything outside the system is called surrounding.
- A boundary separates a system from the surrounding.
- There are three types of thermodynamic systems.
1.Open system2.Closed system3.Isolated system
- Open System :
- It is a type of system in which both mass and heat can cross the boundary.
Example: A cup of hot coffee is a perfect example of an open system since both heat and mass can cross-system boundaries. Boiling water in an open system.
2. Closed System :
It is a type of system in which only heat can cross the boundary.
Example: A pot of boiling water with a lid over it is a perfect example of a closed system since only heat can cross the system's boundary.
3. Isolated System:
It is a type of system in which neither heat nor mass can cross the boundary.
Example:
Hot water in thermos flask Is a perfect example of an isolated system since neither heat nor mass can cross-system boundary.
