Window air conditioner working, Advantage and disadvantages of window ac, what are the precaution to be taken while installing the window ac

Window air conditioning:

  • Window air conditioners are one of the most commonly used and cheapest type of air conditioner.
  • The window air conditioner is sometimes referred to as room air conditioner as well.
  • It is the simplest form of an air conditioning system and is mounted on windows or walls.
  • It is a single unit that is assembled in a casing where all the components are located.
  • You need the space to make a slot in the wall and there should also be some open space behind the wall to install the window ac.
  • Easy to install, modify, and shifting.
  • Cost lesser in comparison to others.

Parts of the window air conditioner:

  • The whole assembly of the window air conditioner can be divided into two components:
  • The room side(indoor), which is also cooling side and the outer side from where the heat absorbed by the room air is liberated into the atmosphere.
  • Indoor Side components are evaporator, blower, capillary tube, operation panel, drain panel, filter drier, and outside components are compressor, fan, motor, condenser.

Each components explanation:

Window ac front view

  • On the room side there is a beautifully decorated front panel on which supply and return air grills are fitted.
  • We can supply the air in the desired location with the help of the supply grill because it is adjustable.
window ac filter view

  • In behind the return air grill, a filter is fitted to remove the dust particle from the air.
window ac evaporator

  • In behind the filter evaporator coil or cooling, the coil is fitted. The cooling coil is where the heat exchange happens between the refrigerant in the system and the air in the room.

  • In behind the evaporator or cooling, coil blower is fitted inside the window air conditioning system.
  • The propeller fan is fitted near the condenser coil. It is also known as a condenser fan. It sucks the atmospheric air and blows it over the condenser.
  • One motor is fitted between the blower and condenser fan. It has double shaft on one side of which blower is fitted and on the other side, the condenser fan is fitted.
  • A capillary tube is also known as an expansion device. It helps to decrease the pressure of the refrigerant.
  • Filter Drier helps to remove the moisture from the refrigerant.
  • The operation panel is used to control the temperature and speed of the blower fan. A thermostat senses the return air temperature and another one to observe the temperature of the coil.
  • Drain pan is used to contain the water that comes from the cooling coil and is push out to the outdoor by gravity.
  • A compressor is used to compress the refrigerant.
Before know about the working principle of the window air conditioner first know how the refrigeration cycle works. To know about this, visit the below link.

Working principle of window air conditioner:

  • When the window air conditioner is started the blower starts immediately and after a few seconds, the compressor also starts. The evaporator coil gets cooled as soon as the compressor is started.
  • The blower behind the cooling coil starts sucking the room air, which is at high temperature and also carries the dust particles. On its path towards the blower, the room air first passes through the filter where dust particles from it get removed.
  • The air then passes over the cooling coil where two processes occur. Firstly, due to this temperature of the room air becomes very low, that is air becomes chilled. Secondly, due to a reduction in the temperature of the air, relative humidity reduces.
  • This chilled air is sucked by the blower and it passes through a small duct inside the air conditioner and it is then thrown outside the air conditioner through the supply grill and by this chilled air enters the room and maintains the low temperature and low humidity inside the room.
  • The cool air inside the room absorbs the heat and also the moisture and so its temperature and moisture becomes high. This air is again sucked by the blower and the cycle repeats.

Advantage:

  • Low cost
  • Extremely energy efficient
  • Easy to install
  • Doesn’t take up floor space
  • These units are particularly good at removing smells, like cigar or cigarette smoke.

Disadvantage:

  • It takes longer to cool off your room.
  • Most of the window air conditioners do not provide heating in winters.
  • No provision of humidification in the window air conditioner.
Precaution to be taken while installing window air conditioning:
  • It should be fitted with a small slope (3 deg. To 5 deg.) downward, towards the outside which ensures that draining of condensate at cooling soil it outside the room.
  • It should be ensured that the condenser is not exposed to direct solar heat to prevent a new rise in condenser pressure.
  • The gaps between the wall opening and the package should be blocked by insulation.
