Cooling Tower/ Types of Cooling tower

Cooling tower

  • It helps to reject the heat to the atmosphere through the cooling of a water stream to a lower temperature. It receives hot water from the condenser and removes the heat of the water to the atmosphere and supplies to the chiller.
Parts:
  1. Motor cap: It saves the motor from rain.
  2. Motor
  3. Fan: It is used to extract the heat from the water to the atmosphere.
  4. Eliminator: It helps to separate the water from the air.
  5. Nozzle Head: It increases the evaporation process.
  6. Nozzle: It helps to increase the surface area of water.
  7. PVC filling: It increases the more surface area of water.
  8. Mesh: It helps to remove the dust particles from the fresh air.
  9. Floater: It helps to maintain the water level in the tank.
  10. Bleed Valve: We use this valve to control the concentration of the minerals of water.
  11. Makeup Water
  12. Overflow: When the water level increases, the extra water will be removed via the overflow pipe.
  13. Sump tank:
  14. Drain valve: It is given for future maintenance.
  15. Outlet pipe: With the help of this pipe, cold water comes out from the cooling tower.
  16. inlet pipe: With the help of this pipe, hot water enters into the cooling tower.
Working:
  • Hot water comes from the condenser and falls down in the cooling tower through the sprinkler, which helps to spread the water supply and it passes through PVC fill.
  • Fresh air enters the cooling tower and it passes through PVC fill which carries water drop plates and fresh air absorbs heat from the water and rejects the atmosphere by the help of propeller fan. Near the propeller fan, we use a draft eliminator to pass only hot air not water drop plates.
  • Water stores below the cooling tower which comes from the nozzle. We use makeup water to supply water when the water level is low.
Types of Cooling Tower:
        1) Natural cooling tower
        2) Mechanical draft cooling tower

Mechanical draft cooling towers are divided into three parts:
        a) Forced draft
        b) Induced draft crossflow
        c) Induced draft counter flow

Forced draft:

  • Airflow to the tower by a centrifugal fan at the air inlet
  • It is suited for high resistance and fans are relatively quiet.

Induced draft crossflow:
  • Air enters on one side or opposite slide.
  • Hot air enters at the tops and it passes overfill.

Induced draft counterflow:
  • Hot water enters at the top.
  • Air enters the top and exits at the top.
  • A fan is used at the top.
