Water cooled chiller working/ Components of water cooled chiller

Water cooled chiller

In this system, there are 3 cycles.

1) Refrigeration Cycle

2) Water cycle between cooling tower and condenser

3) Water cycle between AHU and evaporator

Refrigeration Cycle:

Parts are required for refrigeration cycle:

a) Compressor

b) Shell & tube type condenser

c) Expansion valve

d) Shell & tube type evaporator

Working:

  • Let's start with the compressor. It compresses the vapor refrigerant and converts it into a high pressure, high-temperature vapor refrigerant.
  • This high-temperature Vapor refrigerant flows into the shell side of the condenser.
  • As we are using shell and tube type condenser, hence it has two sides. One is the shell side, another is the tube side.
  • On the tube side, water is available and it has a low temperature as compared to vapor refrigerant which is available on the shell side. As vapor refrigerant has low temperature hence it rejects heat to the water and converts into a  hot liquid refrigerant.
  • This hot liquid temperature will flow in the expansion valve which helps to reduce the pressure of the refrigerant and converts it into low temperature and low-pressure liquid refrigerant.
  • It will flow into the tube side of the evaporation tube and water is available on the shell side. Here water temperature is more as compared to liquid refrigerant. Hence it absorbs heat from the water and it converts into vapor refrigerant and it flows into the compressor. Again compressor starts to compress and it continues.

Water cycle between Cooling Tower & Condenser:

Condenser water pump cycle

Parts are required:

1) Condenser

2) Pump

3) Cooling Tower

Working:

  • Pump suck cooling water from the cooling tower and supply it to the condenser tube side.
  • The condenser shell side contains hot vapor refrigerant which has more temperature as compared to cooling water hence it rejects heat to the cooling water.
  • After that cooling water gets converted into hot water and it flows to the cooling tower.
  • Cooling tower helps to convert hot water into cold water.

  • Again this cold water sucks pump and this process continues.

Water cycle between the AHU & Evaporator ( Chiller):

Parts are required:

1) AHU

2) Pump

3) Evaporator( Chiller)

working:

  • The pump sucks cold water from the evaporator which is available at the shell side of the evaporator and supplies it into the AHU cooling coil.
  • In AHU, blower sucks returned air and fresh air, which is flows over the cooling coil.
  • When it passes over the cooling coil, it rejects the heat because the cooling coil has chilled water that has a very low temperature as compared to the return air.
  • After absorbing heat, chilled water converts into hot water and it flows to the evaporator shell side.
  • On tube side of the evaporator has low-temperature liquid refrigerant and it absorbs heat from the hot water which is on the shell side of the evaporator.
  • After rejecting the heat to the liquid refrigerant it converts into chilled water and again pump sucks the chilled water and supply to the AHU and it continues.
